Freeman’s vibrant paintings evoke the transition from 20th-century Cubism to the more fluid, undulating forms of the 21st century. Her colorful shapes suggest skyscrapers, stained-glass windows, imaginary figures, illegible texts, or puzzle pieces.
— Lilly Wei
My paintings and drawings incorporate forms found in architecture, design, popular culture, and art history. I use adhesive tape to mask shapes and create stenciled forms. This process references early screen-printing techniques, as well as Cubism and collage.
My recent multicolored paintings and drawings are made with saturated dyed colors on linen and with gouache on handmade paper. They consist of hand-drawn shapes that spread flat and meet at the edges. The curves and irregularities of the edges emphasize the space between them, reading both as a line and as a structure. The shapes and colors are rendered intuitively, each choice informing the next, always keeping in mind the interaction of negative and positive space.
When I apply oil paint to linen, I try to preserve and emphasize the physical properties inherent to both materials—the weave of the linen and the pure, saturated color of the paint. This direct, tactile approach celebrates the detail of forms, the beauty of singular color, and the power of simplicity.
— Joanne Freeman
