In the works of Destroyers/Builders, an interaction between pieces of furniture is based on a general inspiration drawn from architectural elements, materials, or construction techniques. Linde Freya Tangelder, the founder of the studio, strives to find a sensory relevance and a cultural value in details as well as on a larger scale. The works have a sculptural and architectural character, balancing contemporary and traditional elements.
Inspired by architectural forms, the furniture pieces highlight the space between industry and the human, through various materials. The constructions are brought back to a human scale, and their translations manifest through sculptural gestures. Materials of both high and low quality are reassessed, reconsidered, and transformed. Handcrafted interventions and finishes give these architectural objects a tangible presence. The contrast of materials, their manipulable quality, and the visible human traces in the object explain the method of Destroyers/Builders.
Destroyers/Builders undertakes projects ranging from commissions to self-initiated work, spanning the fields of architectural furniture and interior projects. The studio was founded in 2014 and is based in Antwerp and Brussels.
