Ramón Enrich (Igualada, 1968) lives and works in his hometown in Catalonia, where he trained in fine arts and graphic arts before leaving for the United States in the late 1980s on a scholarship. This journey would prove foundational: in Marfa, Texas, he met Donald Judd, a central figure of American minimalism, and discovered the Chinati Foundation, where Judd transformed former military hangars into a setting for his work and his collection; in Los Angeles, he crossed paths with Ed Ruscha, painter of language and of the Californian landscape, and became close to David Hockney, already one of the most recognized British painters of his generation, with whom he would later collaborate; then in New York, he became the assistant of Julian Schnabel, a leading figure of the New York neo-expressionist painting of the 1980s. From these encounters, Enrich retained not a style to imitate but a requirement: that of form reduced to the essential, where rigor and sensuality never exclude one another.
His work is organized entirely around a single dialogue, that of architecture and landscape. His canvases compose great empty scenarios: flat roofs, endless staircases, urban grids, cypresses reduced to cones, industrial halls turned into pure cubes, like a symbolic alphabet in which each form stands for itself more than for the object it designates. No human presence inhabits them, and the light, seeming to come from several directions at once, suggests several moments of the day at the same time.
This strangeness is not a stylistic effect; it is a conception of space that Enrich shares with two painters who, neither of them, ever really painted buildings. In Giorgio de Chirico, the metaphysical square (its arcades, its impossible shadows, its perspective that lies) refers to no real city; it is a mental theater, an architecture built for thought rather than for use. In Giorgio Morandi, it is bottles lined up on a table that compose, on a reduced scale, the volumes of a silent city, a discreet urbanization of the still life, where the void between objects weighs as much as the objects themselves. In both cases, the canvas does not represent a place: it makes one according to its own laws. Enrich inherits this conviction. His buildings exist somewhere between the architect's plan and the mental landscape: precise enough that one believes one could walk in them, unreal enough that one understands one never will.
"My intention is to produce scenes for reflection," says Enrich. "I try to create a timeless moment within this modern, frenetic world."
His work has since entered collections as varied as those of La Caixa, Deutsche Bank and the Fundació Vila Casas, alongside private collections such as those of David Hockney or the architect Norman Foster, a rare recognition for a painter who has remained faithful to his studio in Igualada rather than to the capitals of the art world. Like De Chirico's square, like Morandi's table, Enrich's landscape is not a place one visits: it is a space one thinks.
