Exploring the sculptural and symbolic powers of thread, Camille Mugnier constructs relief canvases, line by line, much like a poet weaves her verses onto paper. Her work is the result of a lengthy process of shaping the material through thread and color. By developing her own tools for weaving and needle painting, Camille creates sculptures that unfold in space like growing organic forms.
After studying at the Beaux-Arts in Nantes and then textile design at the École La Martinière-Diderot in Lyon, she lived in South America for several years starting in 2011 to study pre-Columbian art and textile traditions. Camille worked notably in the region of Cuzco, Peru, and then in Chile with artisans to create a clothing brand. Upon her return to France in 2019, Camille Mugnier brought these experiences together and channeled them into an artistic practice that explores the memory of fabric and the intimate relationship we have with clothing. She draws inspiration from the history of traditional costumes and ancestral culture to examine our connection between material and narrative.
Her work conveys human stories, embodies memory, and celebrates nature. In a slow passage of time, akin to that of living beings, the forms that emerge, abstract yet deeply organic, seem to be in a state of constant transformation. By moving beyond the garment, Camille Mugnier dresses the void and creates a time-matter that could be part of a body, a garment, an element of flora, or all at once. The canvas becomes a living material playing on the porosity between the human fabric and nature.

Born in Dijon in 1985, Camille Mugnier lives and works near La Rochelle.
