Born in 1971, Joana Vasconcelos is a Portuguese visual artist known for her monumental sculptures and immersive installations. She transforms everyday objects into spectacular works of art, reinterpreting traditional craftsmanship on a contemporary scale. Her work establishes an ongoing dialogue between the private sphere and public space, and between popular culture and institutional heritage.
Through an approach blending humor, irony, and critical thinking, she explores themes such as the role of women, the mechanisms of consumer society, and the construction of collective identity. Her works captivate with their visual impact while inviting a deeper, often socially engaged interpretation.
Her works have been exhibited in numerous prestigious institutions around the world and are now part of major public and private collections. Her work has also been recognized with numerous awards, both in Portugal and internationally.
Alongside her artistic practice, Joana Vasconcelos has developed a production studio in Lisbon, bringing together numerous collaborators, and is involved in cultural and social initiatives through her foundation, helping to make art accessible to a wider audience.
