Marta Cypel is an Italian ceramic artist whose work explores the relationship between soil and human experience. Now based in Lisbon after 13 years in Paris, she has developed a practice rooted in experimentation and material transformation.
Drawing inspiration from geology, where each layer tells a story of formation and erosion, her work reflects on how landscapes, like people and societies, are shaped, fractured, and rebuilt over time. She formulates all of her own glazes, incorporating materials gathered from her surroundings, wood ashes, sand, and tea leaves, allowing each place to become embedded within the work.
By patching together porcelain and different types of stoneware Cypel explores the tensions between connection and separation, destruction and creation, loss and renewal. Rather than concealing fractures, she treats them as evidence of transformation, revealing how broken forms can give rise to new ones.
Shaped by a personal confrontation with mortality in 2020, her practice has become a meditation on continuity, where every ending holds the possibility of a new beginning. Her ceramics evoke contemporary relics, bridging the ancient and the modern while carrying traces of memory and change.
