"To stand in front of a painting by Ludovic Philippon is to agree to give up the initial illusion that what is there can be named, identified or recognised. Is what I thought was a floral motif anything other than an expanding white space against an orange background? But what is the background here, the orange or the white? Orange Sweetness, says the title. This is a far cry from dictionaries and their cold definitions. We are at the heart of painting: of what painting gives us to experience when it plays with the limits that freeze the visible. "
